Blessed Are the Meek

Meekness may be the most misunderstood word in the Beatitudes. We hear "meek" and think "weak"—a pushover, a doormat, someone too timid to stand up for themselves. But in the biblical sense, meekness is strength under control. It is the quality of a powerful horse that has been trained to respond to the lightest touch of the reins. The power is still there. It is simply directed by a greater will.

Jesus Himself is the perfect picture of meekness. He had the authority to call down legions of angels but chose to submit to the cross. He had the power to silence His accusers but stood quietly before Pilate. He had the right to demand honor but washed His disciples' feet. Meekness is not the absence of strength—it is the decision to use strength for the good of others rather than for the advancement of self.

The world says the aggressive inherit the earth—the bold, the powerful, the ones who take what they want. Jesus says the exact opposite. The meek will inherit the earth. Not by seizing it, but by receiving it from the hand of God. The kingdom operates by an entirely different economy, where those who surrender control are the ones who end up with everything.

Meekness requires more courage than aggression. It takes far more strength to hold your tongue than to lash out, to forgive than to retaliate, to serve than to demand. The meek are not weak people pretending to be strong. They are strong people who have placed their strength under God's authority.
