Blessed Are the Merciful

Mercy is not getting what you deserve. It is the hand that reaches down to someone who has fallen rather than the finger that points out why they fell. It is the decision to treat someone better than they have treated you, not because they earned it, but because you have been treated that way by God.

Notice the pattern: those who show mercy receive mercy. This is not a transaction—it is a family resemblance. People who have truly experienced God's mercy cannot help but extend it to others. And people who refuse to extend mercy reveal that they have not truly grasped the mercy they themselves have received. Jesus will make this point even more explicitly later in the Sermon when He teaches about forgiveness.

Mercy is demanding because it requires us to enter into the pain of others. It is easier to judge from a distance than to draw near with compassion. It is easier to offer advice than to offer presence. But mercy does what is hard—it steps into the mess, sits with the broken, and offers grace without conditions.

The world runs on justice: you get what you deserve. The kingdom runs on mercy: you get what you need. Every day, God extends mercy to you that you did not earn and do not deserve. The question is whether you will pass that mercy along—to the difficult coworker, the frustrating family member, the person who wronged you and never apologized. Mercy is the proof that the gospel has taken root in your heart.
