Do Not Be Anxious
Matthew 6:25–27
Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing? See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they? “Which of you by being anxious, can add one moment to his lifespan?
World English Bible
Jesus does not shame us for feeling anxious. He redirects us. His command to "not be anxious" is not a dismissal of our concerns but an invitation to see them in the right perspective. He does not say our needs are unimportant. He says our Father already knows about them.
The logic Jesus uses is beautifully simple. Look at the birds. They do not plant crops or build storehouses, yet God feeds them every day. And you—made in the image of God, beloved by the Creator of the universe—are you not worth more than a sparrow? If God can be trusted with the life of a bird, He can certainly be trusted with yours.
Anxiety is, at its root, a failure of imagination. Not imagination in the creative sense, but in the spiritual sense. We can imagine all the things that might go wrong, but we struggle to imagine a God big enough to handle them. Worry paints vivid pictures of disaster but cannot paint a single picture of God's faithfulness. And yet His faithfulness is the most reliable thing in the universe.
Jesus ends with a devastating question: Which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his life? Worry is not just unpleasant—it is unproductive. It changes nothing except the condition of your heart. Today, instead of rehearsing your worries, rehearse God's faithfulness. Instead of asking "What if it all goes wrong?" ask "What if God is exactly who He says He is?"
Reflect
- What am I most anxious about right now, and have I brought that specific concern to God?
- When I look at God's track record in my life, what evidence do I see of His faithful provision?
- How would my day look different if I truly believed that my heavenly Father knows what I need?
Pray
Bring your specific anxieties to God by name today. Ask Him to replace your worry with trust, and to help you see His faithful provision in the details of your life. Pray for the peace that comes from knowing your Father cares for you.
