Do Not Love the World

1 John 2:15–17

Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s. The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God’s will remains forever.

World English Bible

Every store window, every feed you scroll, every ad between songs is making you an offer: this is the life. The newer car, the better body, the bigger title. John looks at the whole glittering arrangement and says five startling words: “Don’t love the world.” Not don’t love people: God so loved the world that He gave His Son. Not don’t enjoy creation: every good gift comes from the Father. John means the system: the whole web of desire and pride that runs as if God were irrelevant.

He itemizes it with unnerving accuracy. The lust of the flesh: appetite promoted to king, the insistence that cravings be obeyed. The lust of the eyes: the ache of acquisition, the happiness that always lives in the next purchase. The pride of life: the hunger to be envied, to build a self impressive enough that we don’t need grace. Three desires, and not one of them is new. They are the oldest sales pitch on earth, and they all make the same promise: you will finally be full. They have never once delivered.

Notice that John frames this as a battle of loves, not a list of rules. “If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him.” The heart is a throne room with a single seat. You don’t drift from loving the world into loving the Father by gritting your teeth; you get there by tasting a better love. The Father’s love doesn’t just forbid the world’s substitutes. It outclasses them.

Then John plays his trump card: time. “The world is passing away with its lusts.” Everything the system sells you has an expiration date: every trophy tarnishes, every trend curdles, every status update sinks. “But he who does God’s will remains forever.” Read that slowly. The person being formed by obedience is the one durable thing in a disposable world. Today you will invest your love somewhere. One investment evaporates. The other you keep forever.

Reflect

  • Which of the three (appetite, acquisition, or applause) has the strongest grip on my heart right now, and how can I tell?
  • What am I currently pouring love into that I know, deep down, is passing away?
  • If the Father’s love truly satisfied me, what worldly substitute would I finally be free to release?

Pray

Confess to God the specific desire (flesh, eyes, or pride) that has been quietly ruling you. Ask Him to make His love more real to you than the world’s best offer, not just more obligatory. Then thank Him that a life spent doing His will is the one investment you can never lose.
