God Is Light

1 John 1:5–7

This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie and don’t tell the truth. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.

World English Bible

Of everything John could announce first (after a lifetime of walking with Jesus, after the cross and the empty tomb), here is the message he leads with: “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” No darkness at all. No hidden motives. No fine print. No mood you must catch Him in, no shadow side that contradicts His revealed face. What you see in Jesus is what God is, all the way down. In a world of mixed motives and partial truths, there exists one Being who is pure, undiluted light.

Now the uncomfortable arithmetic. If God is light, and we claim fellowship with Him while walking in darkness, John says it bluntly: we lie. Not “we are mistaken”. We lie. You cannot have communion with the light while managing a portfolio of secrets. Notice John's verb, though: walk. He is not talking about a bad day or a single stumble; he is talking about direction, the habitual path of a life. The question is not whether you have shadows. It is whether you live in them, whether concealment has become your address.

Then comes the surprise, and it is pure grace. Read the second half carefully: “if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.” Did you catch it? People walking in the light still need cleansing from sin. Walking in the light does not mean walking sinlessly. If it did, no blood would be needed there. It means walking honestly. Exposed. Done hiding. The light is not where perfect people live; it is where forgiven people live, because the light is where the blood does its work. Darkness offers concealment; light offers cleansing. You cannot have both.

And notice the byproduct: fellowship with one another. Real community is a colony of people who have stopped pretending. When believers come out of hiding (about struggles, doubts, failures), masks drop, and something deeper than friendliness becomes possible. So step into the light today. Not because you have nothing shameful to expose, but precisely because you do, and because the only sin the blood of Jesus does not cleanse is the one we insist on keeping in the dark.

Reflect

  • What am I currently managing in the dark: the thing I have arranged my life to keep concealed from God, from others, or from myself?
  • Do I treat the light as a threat to be avoided or as the place where cleansing actually happens?
  • Is there anyone who knows me fully, and if no one does, what is that hiddenness costing my soul and my relationships?

Pray

Confess to God the specific thing you have been keeping in the dark: name it plainly, without the usual softening. Thank Him that the blood of Jesus cleanses from all sin those who walk honestly in the light. Then ask Him for the courage to let one trusted believer into what you confessed, so that fellowship can grow where hiding used to live.
