Sarah: Believing the Impossible
Hebrews 11:11-12
By faith even Sarah herself received power to conceive, and she bore a child when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised. Therefore as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as innumerable as the sand which is by the sea shore, were fathered by one man, and him as good as dead.

Hidden in this verse is a small accounting word: Sarah “counted him faithful who had promised.” Counted. Reckoned. Did the math. Picture her at the tent door, ninety years old, ledger open on her lap. On one side: a body the text bluntly calls “as good as dead,” decades of waiting, a womb that had answered every hope with silence. On the other side: a promise, and the character of the One who made it. And somewhere along the way, Sarah decided the second column outweighed the first.
That is what faith actually is: not a feeling that floats in when circumstances improve, but a settled judgment about who God is. Notice that nothing about Sarah's situation changed before she believed. She was still old. The biology was still impossible. Faith did not rearrange the facts; it reweighed them. It refused to let the visible evidence have the last word over the spoken promise.
And here is the part that should steady you: the writer says she “received power.” Power she did not have. Faith is not a force we generate by squeezing our eyes shut and wanting something badly enough. It is opening empty hands toward a faithful God and letting Him supply what we cannot. Sarah contributed her impossibility; God contributed the power. From that partnership came descendants like stars, like sand, a whole sky full of life out of one couple's deadness.
This is how God still works on people. He does not wait for you to become impressive; He waits for you to become honest. Honest about the deadness, and honest about His faithfulness. The places in your life that feel most barren (the relationship past repair, the habit past breaking, the prayer past answering) are not disqualified from His promise. They are precisely where His power prefers to land. The question is the one Sarah faced at the tent door: which column will you let weigh more?

- When I look at the most impossible situation in my life right now, which weighs more in my heart: the visible evidence or the character of God?
- Have I quietly stopped praying about something because I decided it was past hope, and what does that decision say about what I believe God is like?
- Where am I trying to generate faith by effort instead of receiving power from the One who promised?
Pray
Name before God the one thing in your life that feels “as good as dead.” Don't minimize it. Lay it out honestly, the way Sarah knew her own age. Then deliberately count Him faithful: thank Him for specific times He has kept His word to you. Ask Him for the power you do not have, and trust Him with the timing you cannot see.
