The Healing Power of Words
Proverbs 12:18
There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.
World English Bible
Words can wound, and words can heal. Solomon draws a vivid picture: rash words are like sword thrusts—sudden, sharp, and capable of doing real damage. But the tongue of the wise brings healing—like medicine applied to an open wound, like a steady hand that mends what is broken.
Most of us have experienced both. We know what it feels like to be cut by someone's careless remark, to carry the sting of words spoken in anger or frustration. And we know the relief that comes when someone speaks kindness into our pain—when a friend says exactly what we need to hear, or when a brother or sister in Christ reminds us of a truth we had forgotten.
The difference between rash words and healing words is rarely the content. Often the same truth can be delivered as a sword thrust or as a gentle balm. The difference is in the heart of the speaker. A person filled with impatience and self-righteousness will wound even when they mean to help. A person filled with compassion and humility will bring healing even when the words are hard to hear.
God wants us to be healers with our speech. In a world full of cutting remarks, harsh criticism, and reckless opinions, the person who speaks with wisdom and kindness stands out like a light in the darkness. Your words today have the power to bind up wounds that others have inflicted. Do not underestimate what God can do through a sentence spoken at the right time.
Reflect
- Have my words recently been more like sword thrusts or like healing medicine?
- Is there someone around me who is carrying wounds that my words could help heal?
- What is one practical step I can take today to use my words for healing?
Pray
Pray that God would fill your heart with compassion so that your words bring healing to those around you. Ask Him to reveal anyone in your life who needs an encouraging word today, and give you the courage to speak it.
