The Red Sea: Faith That Steps Forward
Hebrews 11:29
By faith they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land. When the Egyptians tried to do so, they were swallowed up.
World English Bible
Two groups of people walked onto the same seabed that night. Same towering walls of water, same wind, same wet sand underfoot. One group came out the other side singing; the other never came out at all. Hebrews wants us to notice the difference, because it wasn't the path. It was what carried them onto it. Israel passed through “by faith.” Egypt tried the identical route by presumption, and the sea swallowed them.
That distinction matters more than we like to admit. We tend to think faith is proved by boldness, by being willing to march into the impossible. But Egypt was bold. Egypt charged in with horses and chariots and total confidence. Boldness on a path God hasn't opened to you is not faith; it is just momentum. Israel walked between the walls of water because God had commanded, “Go forward,” and promised to bring them through. Egypt walked in chasing what it wanted. The seabed will hold the obedient and drown the presumptuous, and from the shore the two can look identical.
Still, give Israel's faith its due, because it had to move. Stand on that shore in your imagination: water heaped up on either side like glass cliffs, held by nothing visible, and the only way home running straight between them. Every instinct says wait: wait until it looks safer, until someone else goes first, until the trembling stops. By faith they walked. Not without fear; Scripture is full of frightened people obeying anyway. Faith is not the absence of trembling. It is trembling forward at the word of God.
Most of us live with some sea in front of us: the conversation we've avoided for years, the forgiveness that feels impossible, the calling that would cost too much. We keep waiting for the water to dry up completely, for a path with handrails. God's pattern at the Red Sea suggests He often opens the way only as wide as our next step. The question is never whether the path looks survivable. It is whether God said go.
Reflect
- Where in my life am I standing on the shore, waiting for total certainty, when God has already said “go forward”?
- Can I tell the difference in my own decisions between faith that follows God's word and boldness that's really just chasing what I want?
- What has fear convinced me is a wall when God may intend it to be a corridor?
Pray
Ask God to show you the one place He has already spoken and you have not yet moved. Confess any presumption: the bold plans you've charged into without asking whether He opened them. Then ask for the courage to take the next obedient step today, trembling or not, trusting Him to hold the walls.
