Treasures in Heaven
Matthew 6:19–21
“Don’t lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don’t break through and steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
World English Bible
Moths do not announce themselves. They work in the dark, in the back of the closet, and you discover them only when you pull out the garment and find the holes. Rust is the same: quiet, patient, certain. And thieves, Jesus adds, take care of whatever the moths and rust miss. In three images He files His report on every earthly treasure: all of it, every bit, is in the process of being lost. The only variable is the speed.
Notice that Jesus is not anti-possession. He is anti-bad-investment. “Lay up treasures” is His own command; He simply insists we choose a vault that holds. And there is one: whatever is given to God and to people outlives the moths. The kindness done for someone who could never repay it. The money turned into gospel work, into relief, into another person’s hope. The character forged by obedience no one saw. Send your treasure ahead of you, Jesus says, to the one place where nothing corrodes and nothing can be carried off.
Then He tells us why this matters so much, and it is not finally about money: “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Read that slowly. It runs backward from what we expect. We assume the heart leads and the treasure follows: care about something, then fund it. Jesus says the treasure leads and the heart follows. Your heart migrates toward whatever you have invested in. Park your wealth in a portfolio and your heart will live there, checking on it, fretting over it. Pour yourself into God’s kingdom and you will wake up one day to find that you love it.
Which means Jesus has handed us the steering wheel to our own affections. You cannot directly command your heart to love eternal things, but you can move the treasure, and the heart will pack up and follow. Want to love what God loves? Start putting your money, your hours, your best energy there. The heart always moves in with the treasure.
Reflect
- If my bank statement and calendar were the only evidence available, what would they prove I treasure?
- What am I anxiously protecting right now that moth, rust, or time is already claiming?
- What one deliberate investment (of money, time, or energy) could I move toward eternity this week, and let my heart follow?
Pray
Ask God to show you honestly where your treasure is currently parked, and let your spending and your schedule testify. Confess any place where anxiety over fading things has gripped your heart. Then ask Him for one concrete way to move treasure toward heaven this week, trusting your heart to follow it there.
