Adopted as Sons and Daughters
Galatians 4:4–7
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law, that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as children. And because you are children, God sent out the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

In the Roman world, adoption was a powerful legal act. An adopted child received a new name, a new family, and all the rights of a natural-born heir. Every debt was cancelled. Every former obligation was dissolved. The adopted person was, in the eyes of the law, a completely new person with a completely new identity.
Paul uses this image to describe what happens when we come to God through Christ. We are not merely forgiven—we are adopted. We are not simply pardoned and sent on our way—we are brought into the family of God with full rights as His children. The old identity is gone. The debts are cancelled. We belong to a new family now.
And notice the intimacy Paul describes. God sends the Spirit into our hearts, and that Spirit cries out "Abba!"—the Aramaic word for "Daddy" or "Papa." This is not the language of a distant deity. This is the language of a Father who draws His children close. You do not approach God as a servant approaching a master. You approach Him as a child running to a parent.
If you have been baptized into Christ, you are no longer a slave—to sin, to fear, to the law, or to your old identity. You are a son or daughter of God, and an heir of everything He has promised. That is not a theological abstraction. That is your reality today.

- What "old identity" do I need to let go of in order to fully embrace my identity as God's child?
Pray
Thank God for adopting you into His family through Christ. Ask Him to help you live today with the confidence and security of a beloved child, not the fear of a servant. Pray that the Spirit would deepen your sense of belonging to the Father.
