Ambassadors for Christ

2 Corinthians 5:20

We are therefore ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as though God were entreating by us: we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

World English Bible

An ambassador does not speak on their own authority. They represent someone greater. They carry a message that is not their own, and their job is to deliver it faithfully—not to edit it, water it down, or reshape it to suit the audience. Paul says that is exactly what we are: ambassadors for Christ, carrying the message of reconciliation to a world that desperately needs it.

The staggering part of this verse is the middle phrase: God making His appeal through us. Think about that. The God who could write His message across the sky, who could send angels to every doorstep, who could speak audibly to every person on earth—that God has chosen to make His appeal through ordinary human beings. Through you.

This is both a privilege and a responsibility. The privilege is that God trusts you to carry the most important message in human history. The responsibility is that you carry it faithfully. The gospel is not ours to modify. It is not ours to soften where it is hard or sharpen where it is gentle. We deliver it as we received it—the good news that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself.

You do not need a theology degree to be an ambassador. You need a life that has been changed by the gospel and a willingness to tell others about it. Some of the most powerful witnesses in the history of the church have been ordinary people who simply said, "Let me tell you what God has done for me." That is all an ambassador needs to say.

Reflect

  • Do I see myself as an ambassador for Christ in my daily life, or do I keep my faith private?
  • Am I faithfully representing the gospel, or have I been tempted to soften it to avoid discomfort?
  • Who in my life needs to hear the appeal to be reconciled to God? How can I share it with them?

Pray

Ask God to give you the courage and clarity to be a faithful ambassador for Christ today. Pray that He would make His appeal through you to someone who needs to hear it, and that your life would faithfully represent the message of reconciliation.
