Citizens of Heaven
Philippians 3:20–21
For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will change the body of our humiliation to be conformed to the body of his glory, according to the working by which he is able even to subject all things to himself.

Philippi was a Roman colony, and its citizens were proud of their Roman citizenship. It gave them rights, protections, and a sense of identity that set them apart from the surrounding peoples. Paul uses this familiar concept to make a spiritual point: your truest citizenship is not in any earthly nation. It is in heaven.
This does not mean we should be indifferent to the world around us. Citizens of heaven are called to be the best citizens of earth—to love their neighbors, to serve their communities, and to seek the good of the place where God has planted them. But it does mean that our ultimate allegiance, our deepest identity, and our greatest hope are not tied to anything this world can offer.
Paul adds a breathtaking promise: Jesus will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body. This is where our citizenship leads—not to an escape from the physical world, but to its redemption. The same body that grows weary, suffers pain, and moves toward death will one day be raised and transformed by the same power that raised Christ from the grave.
When the troubles of this life press in, when disappointment or suffering makes you wonder if this is all there is, remember where your citizenship lies. You are a resident of this world, but you are a citizen of the next. And the best is yet to come.

- How does knowing that my body will one day be transformed change the way I handle suffering and aging?
- What does it look like to live as a citizen of heaven while faithfully serving in the world around me?

Thank God that your citizenship is in heaven and that the struggles of this world are not the final chapter. Ask Him to help you live today with the perspective of eternity, serving faithfully here while holding loosely to the things that will not last.
