Go and Make Disciples

Matthew 28:19–20

Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

World English Bible

These are among the last words Jesus spoke before ascending to the Father, and they reveal what matters most to Him. Not buildings, programs, or institutions—but people. Make disciples. The command is active and outward-facing. The church does not exist to serve itself. It exists to reach the world with the gospel and to teach those who respond how to follow Jesus.

Notice the completeness of what Jesus commands. Making disciples involves going—meeting people where they are, not waiting for them to come to us. It involves baptizing—the obedient response to the gospel that unites a person with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. And it involves teaching—not just a one-time lesson, but ongoing instruction in everything Jesus commanded. Evangelism that stops at conversion is incomplete. A disciple is someone who is continually learning and growing.

This commission is not reserved for preachers and missionaries. It belongs to every person who has been baptized into Christ. You may not stand behind a pulpit, but you have neighbors, coworkers, family members, and friends who need to hear the gospel. Your life is the sermon they read every day. Your love is the argument they find hardest to dismiss.

And Jesus gives us the greatest encouragement imaginable: I am with you always. You are not sent out alone. The same Lord who conquered death walks beside you as you carry His message into the world. The mission may be daunting, but the Missionary is more than sufficient.

Reflect

  • Am I actively participating in the mission of making disciples, or have I left that work to others?
  • Who in my life needs to hear the gospel? What keeps me from sharing it with them?
  • How does knowing that Jesus is with me always change my willingness to step out in faith?

Pray

Ask God to give you a heart for the lost and the courage to share the gospel with those around you. Pray for specific people in your life who need to hear the good news, and ask God to open doors of opportunity for you to speak.
