Growing in Compassion
Ephesians 4:32
And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.
World English Bible
Compassion moves us beyond judgment into mercy. It looks at weakness and chooses kindness instead of criticism. Christ’s life was marked by compassion — He saw the weary, the broken, the overlooked, and responded with tenderness.
We often assess people quickly, assuming we understand their motives or shortcomings. But compassion slows us down. It recognizes that everyone carries burdens we cannot see. When we remember how much we have been forgiven, it becomes harder to withhold grace from others.
Kindness is not weakness; it is strength under control. Forgiveness does not excuse sin, but it reflects the mercy we have received from God. As we grow in Christlike character, our reflex becomes gentleness rather than harshness.
Compassion transforms relationships and mirrors the heart of Christ.
Reflect
- Where have I been quick to judge instead of extend grace?
- How has God shown compassion toward me?
- What opportunity might I have today to respond with kindness?
Pray
Thank God for His mercy toward you. Ask Him to soften your heart and help you extend forgiveness and compassion to those around you.
