Growing in Self-Control
Galatians 5:22–23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
World English Bible
Self-control is often misunderstood as sheer discipline, but Scripture presents it as fruit of the Spirit. It grows not from white-knuckled effort alone, but from a life surrendered to God’s influence.
We live in a culture that celebrates impulse — immediate reactions, instant gratification, unchecked emotion. But Christlike character reflects restraint. It pauses before speaking. It resists harmful temptation. It chooses obedience over appetite.
Self-control is not about suppressing personality; it is about aligning desires with God’s will. As the Spirit works within us, He strengthens our ability to choose wisely instead of reacting blindly.
Growing in Christlike character means learning to say “no” to what harms and “yes” to what honors God.
Reflect
- Where do I most struggle with self-control — in speech, habits, emotions, or thoughts?
- How might surrendering more fully to the Spirit change those areas?
- What small decision today can move me toward greater discipline?
Pray
Ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen you in areas where self-control is difficult. Pray for wisdom and courage to choose obedience over impulse.
