Growing Through the Word
1 Peter 2:2
as newborn babies, long for the pure spiritual milk, that with it you may grow,
World English Bible
A newborn does not have to be convinced to want milk. The hunger is instinctive, urgent, and persistent. Peter uses this image to describe the kind of desire believers should have for God's Word. Spiritual growth depends on a steady appetite for Scripture.
When our hunger for the Word fades, growth slows. Just as a body that stops eating will eventually weaken, a soul that neglects Scripture will lose strength, clarity, and resilience. The connection between nourishment and growth is not complicated — it is simply consistent.
Longing for God's Word is not a sign of spiritual immaturity. It is a mark of spiritual health. The most seasoned believers are often the ones with the deepest appetite for Scripture because they know from experience how essential it is.
If your hunger has grown dull, do not wait for the feeling to return before you open the Bible. Often, appetite follows the meal. Start reading, and the desire will follow.
Reflect
- How would I describe my current appetite for God's Word?
- What has dulled my hunger for Scripture, and what might restore it?
- Am I depending on God's Word for spiritual nourishment, or have I been trying to grow without it?
Pray
Ask God to stir a deep hunger in you for His Word. Pray that Scripture would become as essential to your spiritual life as food is to your body.
