Joseph: Faith Beyond the Grave

The book of Genesis (fifty chapters of creation, covenant, and promise) ends with five strange words: “in a coffin in Egypt.” That coffin was Joseph's idea. The most powerful Hebrew in the world, second only to Pharaoh, could have commanded a pyramid. Instead, dying, he made his brothers swear an oath: when God brings you out of this land (and He will) carry my bones home.

Hebrews finds in that request the essence of faith. Notice what Joseph was certain of: “the departure of the children of Israel,” an exodus that wouldn't happen for hundreds of years, for which there was no visible evidence: no Moses, no plagues, only a promise God had spoken to Abraham generations earlier. Joseph believed it so concretely that he made burial arrangements around it. His faith had logistics.

And notice what Joseph was not seduced by. Egypt had given him everything: rescue from prison, power, a name, a family. He served it faithfully for decades. Yet at the end, it is utterly clear where his heart had never moved in. Success is a more subtle test of faith than suffering. Suffering drives us to ask where God is; success quietly persuades us we no longer need to ask. Joseph passed both tests. He could run Egypt without belonging to it.

So for four hundred years, while Israel slid into slavery, that unburied coffin sat among them, a sermon in a box. Every generation of slaves could look at it and remember: Joseph believed God is taking us home. And when the night of exodus finally came, Moses carried the bones out, and Joshua buried them in the promised land. The promise held.

Here is the question Joseph's coffin asks: what are you arranging your life around: the kingdom you can see or the promise you can't? You will invest somewhere. Joseph teaches us to prosper where God plants us while keeping our deepest roots in His promises. Live usefully in Egypt. Just don't be buried there.
