Moses' Parents: Courage Against the King

Faith, in this verse, looks like a mother muffling a newborn's cry. No parted seas, no burning bush, just two parents in a slave hut, hiding a baby for three months while Pharaoh's decree hung over the Nile and every knock at the door could be the end. Hebrews names this among the great acts of faith in history. Before Moses ever defied a king, his parents did.

Notice what they saw: “they saw that he was a beautiful child.” More than a parent's fondness: Stephen, in Acts, says the child was beautiful “to God.” Amram and Jochebed looked at their son and perceived that this life mattered to heaven, that God had a claim on him that Pharaoh's paperwork could not override. Faith often begins exactly there: seeing what is in front of you the way God sees it, and refusing to hand it over to the world's verdict.

Then notice what they were not: “they were not afraid of the king's commandment.” Surely they felt fear: they were hiding a baby from a genocidal regime; only the foolish would feel nothing. But fear felt and fear obeyed are different things. The king's edict was real, but God was more real. When two fears compete, the larger one wins, and they had let the fear of God grow larger than the fear of Pharaoh. That is most of what courage is: not the absence of trembling, but the right ranking of it.

And consider what their hidden, three-month act of defiance preserved: the deliverer of a nation, the man who would carry the law down a mountain. They couldn't have known. Faithfulness almost never knows what it is protecting. You guard the small obedience in front of you (the child, the conviction, the truth-telling, the integrity nobody sees) and God writes it into a story far larger than your living room. Most of us will never face Pharaoh. All of us decide, daily, in hidden places, whose commandment outranks whose.
