Pressing On
Philippians 3:13–14
Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
World English Bible
Paul, near the end of a life defined by faithfulness, still did not consider himself to have arrived. He was still pressing forward. Still reaching. Still straining toward Christ. Spiritual maturity does not produce complacency; it produces hunger for more.
Forgetting what lies behind is essential. Past failures can paralyze us with guilt. Past successes can lull us into pride. Either way, looking backward pulls our energy away from what God has ahead. Paul chose to release both regret and accomplishment in order to focus on the one thing that mattered: the upward call.
Pressing on is not a sprint. It is a sustained, determined effort to keep following Christ. Some days it feels exhilarating. Other days it feels like crawling. But the direction matters more than the speed. As long as we are moving toward Jesus, we are making progress.
The race is not over. The prize is ahead. And the God who called you is faithful to carry you to the finish.
Reflect
- Am I allowing past failures or past achievements to hold me back?
- What does pressing on toward Christ look like in my life right now?
- Do I believe the best of my spiritual journey is still ahead of me?
Pray
Ask God to help you forget what lies behind and press forward with renewed purpose. Pray for the endurance to keep running and the confidence that His call on your life is worth everything.
