The Power of the Tongue
Proverbs 18:21
Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.

Words are not small things. They carry weight far beyond the moment they are spoken. A single sentence can lift a discouraged soul or crush a hopeful spirit. The writer of Proverbs understood this well—our words hold the power of life and death, and we will live with the consequences of how we use them.
Think about the words that have shaped you most. Somewhere in your past, someone spoke life into you—a parent who believed in you, a friend who told you the truth when it mattered, a teacher of God's Word who opened your eyes to grace. Those words stayed with you because words do not simply disappear. They take root.
But the same is true of careless or cruel words. A sharp remark in anger, a dismissive comment, a promise carelessly broken—these leave marks that linger long after the conversation is over. James would later warn that the tongue is a fire, capable of setting the whole course of life ablaze.
God invites us to be people whose words build up rather than tear down. This is not about being artificially pleasant—it is about recognizing that every conversation is an opportunity to speak life into someone's day. The same God who spoke the world into existence has given us the gift of speech, and He cares deeply about how we use it.

Ask God to make you aware of the power your words carry today. Pray for the wisdom to speak life into every conversation and the self-control to hold your tongue when silence would be the greater kindness.
