Saved by Grace Through Faith
Ephesians 2:8–9
for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.
World English Bible
Salvation is God's gift, not our achievement. Paul makes this unmistakably clear: grace saves us through faith. We did not earn it, we do not deserve it, and we cannot boast about it. From beginning to end, our rescue is God's doing.
This does not mean faith is passive. Genuine faith responds. It trusts, it obeys, it acts. When the gospel was first preached, those who believed repented, confessed Jesus as Lord, and were baptized into Him. Their faith was alive and responsive — not a single moment of mental agreement, but a life reoriented by grace.
The works Paul excludes here are the works of human merit — the idea that we could accumulate enough righteousness to earn salvation on our own. No amount of good behavior can bridge the gap between sinful humanity and a holy God. Only grace can do that.
But grace, once received, changes us. It produces gratitude, obedience, and transformation. A life truly touched by grace does not remain the same.

- Am I resting in God's grace, or quietly trying to earn His approval?
- Has my faith produced a responsive, obedient life, or has it remained merely intellectual?
- How does understanding grace as a gift change the way I view my relationship with God?

Thank God for the gift of salvation through grace. Ask Him to keep you from the extremes of self-reliance and passivity, and to help you live a faith that responds to grace with humble obedience.
