Grace That Teaches

Titus 2:11–12

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age;

World English Bible

Grace is not just a ticket out of condemnation. It is a teacher. Paul says grace trains us to renounce ungodliness and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives. Grace does not leave us where it finds us; it moves us forward.

Some treat grace as though it were permission to sin without consequence. But that is a dangerous misunderstanding. Grace that saves is the same grace that sanctifies. It confronts our sin, retrains our desires, and empowers us to live differently.

The training grace provides is not harsh or legalistic. It is the steady, patient work of God reshaping our character from the inside out. Like a wise teacher who corrects not out of anger but out of love, grace disciplines us for our good.

Grace frees us from the penalty of sin. But it also frees us from the power of sin. Both are gifts, and both are essential.

Reflect

  • Have I been treating grace as permission to stay comfortable in sin?
  • What is grace currently training me to renounce or pursue?
  • Do I see God's discipline as evidence of His grace or as punishment?

Pray

Thank God that His grace does not leave you unchanged. Ask Him to continue training you through grace, renouncing what is ungodly and growing in what honors Him.
