Where Sin Increased

Romans 5:20–21

The law came in that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly, that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

World English Bible

No matter how deep our sin, God's grace runs deeper. Paul's declaration is stunning: where sin increased, grace abounded all the more. There is no depth of failure that exceeds the reach of God's mercy.

This is not an invitation to sin freely. Paul addresses that temptation directly in the very next chapter. Rather, it is a word of hope for those who feel their sin is too great, their past too dark, or their failures too numerous. Grace is not intimidated by the size of our debt.

Sin reigns through death. It enslaves, destroys, and condemns. But grace reigns through righteousness. It restores, transforms, and gives life. The two are not equal in power. Grace always has the final word.

If you have ever wondered whether you have gone too far for God's grace, the answer is no. Where your sin increased, His grace has already surpassed it.

Reflect

  • Is there a sin in my past that I believe is beyond the reach of grace?
  • Am I allowing shame to keep me from fully receiving what God offers?
  • How does the truth that grace surpasses sin change the way I view my own failures?

Pray

Bring your deepest failure before God and ask Him to meet it with His abundant grace. Thank Him that His mercy is always greater than your sin, and ask for the faith to believe it.
