The Kindness of God

Romans 2:4

Or do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?

World English Bible

God's kindness has a direction. It is not aimless generosity. Paul says it is meant to lead us to repentance. Every blessing, every moment of patience, every second chance is an invitation to turn back to God.

We sometimes mistake God's patience for indifference. Because He does not judge immediately, we assume He does not care. But His delay is mercy. He gives time not because sin does not matter, but because people matter to Him. He is waiting for us to come home.

Presuming on grace — taking it for granted, assuming it will always be there regardless of how we live — is a serious danger. God's patience is not unlimited permission to keep sinning. It is an open door that will not remain open forever.

The appropriate response to God's kindness is not complacency. It is repentance. When we see how good He has been, our hearts should soften, not harden.

Reflect

  • Have I been taking God's patience for granted?
  • Where has His kindness been calling me to repentance that I have been ignoring?
  • How can I respond to His grace today with genuine change, not just gratitude?

Pray

Thank God for His extraordinary kindness and patience. Ask Him to soften your heart where it has grown complacent, and to lead you to true repentance wherever it is needed.
