The Power of the Cross

1 Corinthians 1:18

For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are dying, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

World English Bible

The world sees the cross as weakness. A crucified Savior does not fit the mold of power, prestige, or success. But Paul declares that the cross is the very power of God. It accomplishes what human wisdom never could.

The cross confronts our pride. It tells us that our best efforts are not enough, that we need a rescue we cannot provide for ourselves. This is offensive to those who believe in human self-sufficiency. But for those who believe, it is freedom.

At the cross, God’s justice and mercy meet. Sin is condemned, and sinners are offered forgiveness. The penalty is paid in full, and the door to reconciliation with God is opened wide. Nothing we achieve can compare to what Christ accomplished there.

The power of the cross is not just historical — it is present and ongoing. Every day, we live in the reality of what Christ’s death secured. Every day, we are being saved by its power.

Reflect

  • Have I allowed the cross to become familiar rather than powerful in my thinking?
  • Where do I need the power of the cross to work in my life today?
  • Am I placing my confidence in my own wisdom, or in God’s redemptive plan?

Pray

Thank God for the power of the cross. Ask Him to keep it central in your thinking and to help you trust its sufficiency for every area of your life.
