Abiding in Christ
John 15:5
I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
World English Bible
Jesus does not describe the Christian life as self-improvement but as dependence. A branch does not produce fruit by trying harder; it produces fruit by remaining connected to the vine. In the same way, spiritual growth does not come from sheer willpower but from abiding in Christ.
We often live as though our strength, discipline, or experience is what sustains us. But Jesus reminds us that apart from Him we can do nothing of lasting spiritual value. This is not meant to discourage us — it is meant to free us. We were never meant to carry life on our own.
Abiding means staying close to Christ through prayer, Scripture, obedience, and trust. As we remain connected to Him, His life flows into ours, shaping our character and producing fruit we could never manufacture on our own.
Dependence on Christ is not weakness. It is the only path to true strength.

- Where in my life am I relying more on my effort than on Christ’s presence?
- What does “abiding” in Jesus look like in the middle of my normal routine today?
- Am I trying to produce spiritual fruit without staying closely connected to Him?
Pray
Ask Jesus to help you remain close to Him today. Confess areas where you have been striving in your own strength, and ask Him to produce His fruit in your life as you depend on Him.
