Be Still
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”
World English Bible
Stillness is difficult because it exposes how much we are trying to carry on our own. Noise and busyness can become a kind of escape. As long as we are moving, planning, and reacting, we can avoid facing our fears, our limits, and our lack of control. But when God says, “Be still,” He is inviting us to step out of the illusion that everything depends on us.
To be still is not merely to be quiet. It is to stop striving. It means loosening our grip on outcomes, releasing our demand to understand everything, and surrendering our need to fix every problem immediately. Stillness is an act of humility. It acknowledges that God is God and we are not.
In stillness, we remember that the Lord is not anxious about the future. He is not scrambling to make things work out. He reigns with calm authority over nations, circumstances, and the details of our personal lives. When we slow down long enough to remember who He is, our panic begins to lose its power.
Stillness does not remove responsibility, but it reorders it. We do what we can in faith, and we trust God with what only He can do.
Reflect
- What pressures or fears am I trying to manage on my own right now?
Pray
Take time to name the worries you have been carrying. Offer each one to God, acknowledging that He is greater than your fears and fully capable of handling what you cannot control. Ask Him to give you a heart that rests in His sovereignty.
